Join ceramic artist Chris Pate for a dynamic, hands-on workshop exploring the ancient and exhilarating art of Raku firing. Whether you’re a seasoned potter or brand new to ceramics, this is a rare opportunity to witness and participate in the dramatic transformation of clay through fire and smoke.
What You’ll Learn:
- The history of Raku, from its Japanese origins to its evolution and adoption by contemporary Western artists
- The cultural significance of traditional and modern Raku practices
- Post-firing techniques including horsehair and barrel reduction
What You’ll Do:
- Glaze and Raku fire your own bisque-fired pieces
- Watch the kiln reach peak heat, then help unload glowing pottery with tongs
- Participate in multiple firings (each about an hour), and enjoy time connecting with others between rounds
- Clean and cool your finished work, then take it home the same day
