Explore the playful possibilities of colored clay with instructor Steph Okumura. In this two-hour workshop, you’ll learn the basics of nerikomi, a technique that combines colored clays to create patterns within the clay itself. Steph will guide you through building a flower cane, slicing it to reveal the design, and arranging the slices into a patterned slab for handbuilding.
Use your slab to create two coasters, small trinket dishes, or ornaments. If time allows, you’ll also learn ways to turn leftover scraps into beautiful patterns.
We’ll work with prepared colored clay, but Steph will share the basics of how she measures and mixes her colored clays. Leave with an understanding of how to build a cane and transform it into a slab for your own colorful creations. Continue to explore by mixing your own colored clays at home and trying new cane patterns!
After the class, your pieces will be fired with a glossy clear coat of glaze. They will be ready for pickup between February 16th and March 16th, during shop open hours. We will not send email notifications, so please mark your calendar and stop by to collect your little cuties. Our front desk will be happy to assist you!
No experience is necessary—this workshop is fun for both beginners and experienced makers!
