Carving Botanical Wall Tiles with Guest Artist Benjamin Cahoon: A Portland Ceramics Workshop at Radius Art Studio

Looking for a fun Portland ceramics workshop that goes beyond the basics?

On November 1st, Radius Art Studio is hosting a special one-day botanical clay carving class with guest artist and internet-favorite ceramic educator Benjamin Cahoon. Whether you’re brand-new to clay or already have a solid practice and are craving new techniques to deepen your work, this workshop is a chance to learn surface carving in a playful, supportive, and creatively charged environment. If you’ve been searching for Portland pottery classes that are both high quality and ridiculously fun– this is the one!

The aritst bond begins at NCECA

I first got to know Benjamin at the 2025 NCECA conference. He was warm, wildly curious, and fully himself- bouncing between jokes, conversations about creative courage, and excitement about how ceramics can bring people together. We ended up unofficially leading the Portland pottery crew from one gallery pop-up to the next, gathering friends as we went. Between lectures, we were either taste-testing Dirty Sodas in the spirit of “cultural immersion,” gossiping about clay and art education, or diving into bigger conversations about queerness, belonging, and what it means to build community spaces where everyone can experiment and be seen. Oh, or geeking out about dinosaur bones at the Natural History Museum!

Benjamin had shown work in the Radius Gallery before, and I’d been following his online tutorials (and antics) for a while. I love artists who don’t gatekeep their knowledge and who make ceramics feel accessible without watering down the importance of craft. Benjamin is precisely that kind of educator. He has the technical skills and the heart.

By day, we were sitting through lectures on glaze chemistry and the future of craft. By night we were tearing up the dance floor. By the end of the trip, we were scheming ways to bring him into Radius to share some of his joy and knowledge- and now its happening!

What to expect from this clay carving workshop?

This is not just a technical class about carving. It is an invitation to slow down, tune into your creative instincts, and explore botanicals and symbols through texture and form. Benjamin will guide students through creating their own carved wall tile from start to finish with demonstrations, surface technique tips, and time to experiment.

There’s something for everyone here, from beginners to more advanced ceramicists. If you are brand new to clay, you will be in good hands. If you already have a solid foundation, you will leave with new techniques to integrate into your own work. This workshop is also an opportunity for everyone to connect with other makers and be part of the Radius community for a day.

“Students can expect the most immaculate vibes of community making, direction and expectations set at the beginning, then a good amount of work time to push those boundaries and ask questions. Plus, I’ll be making fun stuff with you too. I’m most excited to hang out with new students to me, I really like new friends and encouraging people doing the courageous work of making in this moment we are surviving.” -Benjamin Cahoon, on what to expect

Why are Benjamin and Radius the perfect match?

Benjamin is widely loved online for his approachable style, educational videos, and general clay goofiness, but what really stands out when you meet him in person is the sincerity behind it all. He believes in creative courage. He believes in community care. He believes in showing up to the studio with curiosity rather than perfectionism.

That sentiment is also the heart of Radius. We are a place where people learn reall ceramic skills from working artists, but we also laugh, take creative risks, try weird ideas, and occasionally hide tiny clay treasures on each other’s shelf spaces! If you have been looking for a ceramics studio that offers high quality education and is welcoming to all identities and levels of experience, Radius is for you- and this workshop is a perfect entry point.

Benjamin’s Studio Rituals and Inspirations

Favorite way to reset in the studio: deep breath, jazz music, and a gratitude moment before making a list

Best time of day to create: before or at sunrise

Favorite tools: Kemper large trimming tool and DiamondCore carving tools

Current listening rotation: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, plus Laufey and Doja Cat

One tiny chaos that brings him joy: Miss Piggy throwing shade at Martha Stewart on live television in the 90s

Come carve. Come play. Come be part of the magic that happens when clay, creativity, and community come together.

Haunted Hues Recap: Portland Pop-Up + Gallery Night at Radius

Sometimes it feels like this clay studio is run by a bunch of clowns … in the best way! Last Friday, seven artists set up their ceramics and other handmade crafts out front, neighbors drifted over, and the Radius gallery filled with friends and family cheering on the 40+ artists in this year’s Haunted Hues Gallery Show.

Inside, our circus (Radius’ retail shop) was held down by studio assistants Mariella and Ally, plus studio owner Rin and manager Sandra in full clown mode. We are known for our color and our playfulness here at Radius, and this event was no exception! Want to join the fun? Sign up for a pottery workshop or become a member!

While the staff was busy juggling the candy bowls, member A.J. McCafferty was up to his usual mischief, hiding one of his slip-cast bloody doll arms around the shop for an impromptu scavenger hunt. Two lucky customers got a free pair of his earrings for finding the creepy little hidden stumps!

My practice centers on dark, iron and manganese-rich stoneware, with occasional explorations of porcelain. Rich in texture and character, these materials do most of the work in shaping the final form, guiding a process in which no two pieces are identical and no reproductions are made. Intended for daily use, these pieces of functional art are created to cultivate moments of intimacy and ritual. Each piece invites a tactile connection between maker and user through their weight, texture, and form, grounding everyday experiences in beauty and craftsmanship. -AJ McCafferty

Do you have a favorite dog Halloween costume pic? Tag us on Insta so we can share the joy!

Ever wonder what AJ is up to when he is not causing trouble around Radius? You can find him making beautiful teaware like this porcelain bowl fired in our cone 10 gas kiln, or working at his new Portland restaurant, The Bitter Root Club!

AJ might also be spotted around town or at the studio with his wife Cailin, who is also a ceramicist and Radius Member, and his adorable dog Fig (an essential member of the Radius puppy pack)! Fig came dressed to impress in her dragon costume and spent most of her time looking for her favorite furry friend, Nacho!

Miss the opening? Fear not, there’s still time to see the show!

Haunted Hues is on view through November 2nd. Gallery hours: Tues 1–5 PM, Fri 4–8 PM, Sat 1–5 PM, Sun 10–2 PM.

Next public call for art will go live in January for our February “Selfies & Self Care” show! Join the mailing list and follow @radiusartstudio to stay in the loop.

Thanks for following along and being part of our silly little clay community!

It’s that time of year when our studio kitchen kettle is filling up handmade mugs full of hot tea, the studio pups are leaving wet pawprints on the concrete floors, and you can find “Skullptor”, our turquoise skeleton, moving around the studio set up in different poses depending on who was up working the latest the night before. We’ve been buzzing around Radius this week hanging work, vacuuming up clay dust from the corners, and cueing up the fall playlist, because this Friday we get to do one of our favorite things: throw open the doors and fill the space with familiar faces and new friends for Haunted Hues, our annual Halloween-themed gallery show and pop-up market.

We picked the name “Haunted Hues” because at Radius, we love color! Of course, that includes endless glaze and firing combinations, but you’ll also see it reflected in everything from the Alex Proba mural on our exterior to the “casual clown” outfits you might see our studio owner, Rin, wearing around any given day. Our community is bright, playful, and fun! At this event, you can expect 40+ Portland artists and vendors in every medium, from moody paintings and prints to ceramics and fiber. Come find pieces that make you smile, raise an eyebrow, or make you want to take a tiny ghost mug home for cocoa season.

Tori Moon / @she.and.the.moon / Hand-crafted ceramic platter with deer and celestial details.

Tori Moon (@she.and.the.moon) makes work with a witchy, lunar glow. Her hand built and wheel thrown pieces feel like talismans for the gentler side of spooky season. Torre is also a Radius member, which means we get to see ideas move from sketchbook to shelf. Membership is one of our favorite ways to watch people grow into their own voice. If you’ve been thinking, “I want more art in my life,” a Radius membership might be the way to make that daydream come true.

Q. What does being part of Radius as a member mean to you?

A. For me, becoming a member has solidified my place in this beautiful art space that has been created. I was a student for about 2 years and loved it, but as a member, the sense of community has felt stronger, and to be honest, it’s fun being around and getting to see a little of the “behind the scenes” at the studio! An added benefit for me as well has been the ability to stay as long as needed once I hit the groove of creativity. The joy and inspiration that flows through Radius is one of the biggest perks of my life, and of witchcraft and magic, and I love that this business is a way to share it with you! “ -Tori Moon

Kari (@mythandmilagro) brings folklore, myth, and a wink of mischief into richly illustrated worlds. Kari is also a Radius member, and we’re constantly inspired by her attention to detail, her calm and dedicated work ethic, and her sweet friendship and working relationship with Tori Moon. If you’ve ever wished for a creative routine and a place where people are genuinely rooting for you, that’s exactly what our members have built here at Radius.

Q. Any “spooky-sweet” studio ritual you’re loving this season?

A. I’m all about rituals, and as we enter the fall season and especially my favorite holiday of all, Halloween, I like to add a little more “spooky-sweet” to my work day. I feel a lot of people are prone to listening to music or books and podcasts, but you can always count on me to have a show or movie playing in the background while I’m drawing up new ideas or underglazing my greenware.

Lela Blyler / @nowwhatpotteryworks / Pumpkin mugs getting glazed up for Haunted Hues

Lela Blyler (@nowwhatpotteryworks)- If you’ve been dreaming about learning the wheel, Lela is the person you want in your corner. Her ceramics are refined, joyful, and pattern-rich (and yes, there will be adorable Halloween pieces again this year). Lela is a beloved Radius instructor and one of the folks who helps fire our Cone 10 gas kiln we named Shirley (after Radius owner Rin’s late grandmother).

*Maker’s Note* Our Cone 10 gas reduction kiln is open to the public for firing! Ask us about reserving space the next time you stop in, or find out more here.

Q. What vibe are your fall ceramics bringing to Haunted Hues?

A. I’m bringing cosy fall fairytale vibes to the market! Pumpkin mugs galore. I really love the fall cosy cute vibes, with just a hint of scary! I’ll have jack o lantern mugs, pumpkin mugs, teapots and pitchers.

We’re a ceramics studio, yes, and we adore clay, of course…but we’re also a neighborhood art space. Our retail shop features over 50 local makers year-round, our gallery shows a mix of 2D and 3D work, and our open-call group shows invite new artists to take up room on the walls next to long-time Radius folks. We do it because art is better when everyone has a way in, whether that’s buying a print, taking a one-night workshop with a friend, or deciding to finally commit to a weekly class.

If you’re curious about how to be part of what you’re seeing on Friday night, the path is simple: come hang out! Ask artists about their process. Say hi to our staff. Peek into the classrooms. Tell us what you want to make. We’ll point you toward a class, show you the membership shelves, or add you to the list for our next open call. Speaking of—our next open call goes live in January for the February “Selfies & Self Care” show. Stay in the loop

Whats Happeing in Clay this October: Cozy fall Pottery class options and events at Radius Art Studio

Hi friends!

If your brain’s been full (politics, life, everything), come sit with us for a few hours. Clay is basically a permission slip to be still and breathe with your hands.  Let’s ditch the doomscroll together, get cozy, and make some art this fall.

This month, we’ve lined up quick wins (one-day workshops you can finish in an afternoon), deeper dives (our fall classes start the week of Oct 6), and playful Date Nights that made the “Best of Portland” list for a reason. Plus, if you start now, you’ll be gift-ready by December, so future you and all your special someones will be pleased!

If you’re searching for cozy fall pottery classes or ceramics workshops in Portland, Radius Art Studio has something for every clay lover this October.

Stay Crafty,
Rin & the Radius crew

These longer-format classes are designed for folks wanting to dive deep into clay craft.  Fun for beginners and supportive growth for experienced makers, they come with everything you need- expert instruction, clay, tools, and firing. You’ll also get extra studio time to practice and play during our weekly open studio hours.

Rin Noelle is known for being a kind and supportive instructor for beginners and inspiring returning learners to experiment and push themselves in their clay play. In this class, you’ll make bowls and other vessels, learn several glazing and decorating techniques, and leave with pieces you’ll actually use (or gift).

Center Yourself at the Pottery Wheel

Turn your big ideas into solid sculptures! Paige Wright‘s many years of experience and supportive coaching will guide you through solid, coil, slab, and section building, along with kiln-friendly planning and glazing demonstrations. No experience, no problem! Beginners and returners are welcome- Paige will meet you where you’re at.

Calm your Mind and Hand Sculpt Clay

These shorter workshops are fast and fun- get a taste for clay or learn a specialized skill to add to your creative toolbelt.

Skip the multi-week bootcamps- this one-day intensive with master mold maker Brett Binford gets you from idea to finished plaster mold, ready to take home the same day! Bring a few objects from home (fruit/veg, a favorite cup, or a small sculpture) and Brett will help you pick the winner.

Why would one want a mold, you ask? Good question- having a mold allows you to easily make multiples for quick gifts or matching sets.

Then pour, set, release, repeat! You’ll leave confident (and probably a little obsessed) with the possibilities after taking the slip casting workshop. Use the mold you made or cast from one that Brett will bring to share.

Make a Mold or Learn to Cast, These classes are fun on their own and great as a pair!

Dive into the hot world of Raku and fire up some pieces! Join us for a hands-on Raku experience that will be fast, fiery, and fun! You’ll finish pieces in a single magical session to take home at the end of class. Don’t have experience or any bisqueware ready to fire? No problem! Add on a premade teacup made by special guest instructor Chris Pate to glaze and participate in the fun.
