Haunted Hues Recap: Portland Pop-Up + Gallery Night at Radius

Sometimes it feels like this clay studio is run by a bunch of clowns … in the best way! Last Friday, seven artists set up their ceramics and other handmade crafts out front, neighbors drifted over, and the Radius gallery filled with friends and family cheering on the 40+ artists in this year’s Haunted Hues Gallery Show.

Inside, our circus (Radius’ retail shop) was held down by studio assistants Mariella and Ally, plus studio owner Rin and manager Sandra in full clown mode. We are known for our color and our playfulness here at Radius, and this event was no exception! Want to join the fun? Sign up for a pottery workshop or become a member!

While the staff was busy juggling the candy bowls, member A.J. McCafferty was up to his usual mischief, hiding one of his slip-cast bloody doll arms around the shop for an impromptu scavenger hunt. Two lucky customers got a free pair of his earrings for finding the creepy little hidden stumps!

My practice centers on dark, iron and manganese-rich stoneware, with occasional explorations of porcelain. Rich in texture and character, these materials do most of the work in shaping the final form, guiding a process in which no two pieces are identical and no reproductions are made. Intended for daily use, these pieces of functional art are created to cultivate moments of intimacy and ritual. Each piece invites a tactile connection between maker and user through their weight, texture, and form, grounding everyday experiences in beauty and craftsmanship. -AJ McCafferty

Do you have a favorite dog Halloween costume pic? Tag us on Insta so we can share the joy!

Ever wonder what AJ is up to when he is not causing trouble around Radius? You can find him making beautiful teaware like this porcelain bowl fired in our cone 10 gas kiln, or working at his new Portland restaurant, The Bitter Root Club!

AJ might also be spotted around town or at the studio with his wife Cailin, who is also a ceramicist and Radius Member, and his adorable dog Fig (an essential member of the Radius puppy pack)! Fig came dressed to impress in her dragon costume and spent most of her time looking for her favorite furry friend, Nacho!

Miss the opening? Fear not, there’s still time to see the show!

Haunted Hues is on view through November 2nd. Gallery hours: Tues 1–5 PM, Fri 4–8 PM, Sat 1–5 PM, Sun 10–2 PM.

Next public call for art will go live in January for our February “Selfies & Self Care” show! Join the mailing list and follow @radiusartstudio to stay in the loop.
