Description
In this hands-on class, we’ll explore the many ways clay can be used to create sculptural form—from figurative works inspired by people or animals, to abstract pieces that celebrate shape, texture, and movement. Whether you come in with an idea or want to find inspiration in class, this course is all about developing your own creative direction while learning the sculptural language of clay.
Led by artist and educator Paige Wright, you’ll receive personalized guidance as you design and build your own ceramic sculptures. Instruction includes demos, slide presentations, and one-on-one feedback, allowing you to move fluidly from concept to construction, and finishing with surface treatment.
You’ll learn to:
- Explore figurative and abstract approaches to sculpture
- Build using coil, slab, and solid methods, as well as combinations of wheel-thrown and hand-built forms (demos catered to student’s needs)
- Hollow, reattach, and alter solid forms for safe firing
- Add details, textures, and expressive elements to enhance your work
- Experiment with slips, underglazes, and surface finishes—including both ceramic and “cold finish” materials
This class welcomes artists of all levels who are ready to expand their ideas of what clay can do. Whether your goal is to make a stylized figure, a creature or hybrid form, or a purely abstract sculpture focused on rhythm and proportion, you’ll gain the technical and conceptual tools to bring your vision to life.
