Special guest artist Maggie Boyd is traveling from New York to teach a weekend of ceramic surface decorating at Radius Art Studio! We will be kicking off the weekend with a Friday night demonstration, artist talk, and Q&A. Maggie will be sharing all the hard-earned surface techniques she has developed and refined over the many years of her ceramic practice. In this workshop, you will not be decorating your own pieces, but you will have the opportunity to get your hands on some of Maggie’s work in progress as she passes around her demo pieces for you to closely investigate. You will also get to ask questions and talk shop with Maggie as she demonstrates her process. Bring a sketchbook to take notes and doodle your inspirations!
Have you ever made a clay form of some kind and loved it so much you were afraid to decorate it for fear of messing it up? Did you just throw it in the kiln and hope that at the glaze stage you’ll feel brave enough to take on the question of surface? This workshop is for those of you who feel familiar with the struggle of engaging in the surface world of ceramics and want to have a few more techniques to bolster you in your experimentations. Maggie will discuss and demonstrate techniques using slip, terra sigillata, underglaze, carving, and texture on your unfired (greenware) work as well as showing her glaze decorating process on bisque ware using painting, resisting, staining, and layering techniques.
This workshop is geared towards students with some clay experience but is open to everyone.
This workshop will be held outdoors in our side yard, weather permitting.
