Description
Explore the captivating and transformational process of cyanotypes! Cyanotype is an alternative photographic process where light-sensitive chemicals are applied to a surface like paper or fabric, exposed to UV light, and developed with water to create brilliant blue and white images. We will use our imaginations, chance, and the magic of UV light* to create stunning and exploratory works of art. Wonderfully mysterious pictures appear when rinsed in water! Also known as “sun prints”, this accessible medium involves placing objects and materials onto treated paper. This process is filled with surprises, so bring your curiosity, trust and openness with you to this workshop!
Rachel will provide a short demo and share examples of her work. Then, each participant will make up to three (3) of their very own cyanotypes on watercolor paper, hand coated by Rachel herself. She will be bringing materials like fabric, tchotchkes, fun see-through things, natural objects, etc. for you to play with as well as access to Ulna’s vast still-life tableaux! Feel empowered to bring your own special treasures, as long as you don’t mind it cooking in UV light for a bit.
*We will be using UV lamps inside of the studio for this class in spite of the presumed presence of the summer sun – however, if you wanna get all your stair-steps in back and forth to the second floor, you are welcome to!
High quality (N95/KF94) masks are required and provided for this class. Please do not attend class if you are unwell.
About the instructor: Rachel Mulder lives in Portland, Oregon, with her two cats, Opal and Tomasina. She was born in rural Wisconsin and when she was small she spent a lot of time sitting in the grass staring, obsessing about animals, watching cartoons and peeling her skin off. Now she makes drawings using a variety of media that often yield printmakerly textures – residual effects from earning her BFA in Printmaking at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2007. Encouraging others (and herself) to create/exist sincerely is a parallel passion of hers that braids itself into her visual work. https://rchlmldr.com/
