Explore the creative possibilities of airbrushing with underglazes in this hands-on workshop with guest artist Jenny Flax. Over the course of three hours, you’ll dive into the world of spray application, learning how to achieve smooth coats of color, play with gradients, and experiment with other fun airbrush effects on your ceramics. You’ll learn about the various types of airbrushing equipment, how to properly handle and maintain it, and how to mix underglazes to the right consistency for spraying.
In addition to airbrushing, you’ll get creative with custom vinyl stencils, learning how to use them as resists to create intricate designs. You’ll also experiment with different types of wax resists to add unique textures and layers to your work.
During the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to spray at least two pieces. We recommend students bring one bisque-fired piece and one bone-dry piece to experiment with (although if you only have two bone-dry or two bisque, that is ok too). If we have time, there may be an opportunity to spray additional work, so feel free to bring a few extra pieces if you have them.
We will take care of one firing for your pieces (bisque firing both bone-dry work and pre-bisqued to adhere the airbrush work). If you choose for us to fire your pieces with us, they will be ready for pickup one month after your class date, during open studio hours.
