This hands-on 5-week wheel throwing workshop is designed for both beginner and intermediate students who want to build confidence, strengthen technique, and create functional pottery rooted in one of ceramics’ most important foundational forms: the cylinder.
Class sessions combine demonstrations, personalized instruction, and one-on-one guidance from experienced instructor Lela Blyler. Whether you’re brand new to clay or looking to refine your skills, lessons are tailored to help each student reach their individual goals while building a strong foundation in wheel throwing.
No prior clay experience is necessary. Beginners will focus on foundational wheel throwing and glazing skills while learning to create cups, mugs, vases, and other cylinder-based forms. Intermediate students can explore technical challenges such as throwing taller forms, making multiples, refining consistency, and developing more advanced shapes from the cylinder. Along the way, all students will learn glazing and surface design techniques to add depth, texture, and personality to their work.
By focusing on the cylinder as a core form, students will develop essential techniques that translate into countless future pottery projects while creating a collection of beautiful and functional handmade pieces.
What’s Included:
5 Instructed Sessions, 2.5 hours each
Material and Tools: Each student will receive 12 lbs of clay, 10 firing slips, and access to tools and our large selection of custom glazes.
12 free Open Studio Hours to practice independently. Open Studio Hours are valid through the end of the 5-week course. Hours are redeemed in 2-hour blocks. Additional hours can be purchased at $20 per 2-hour block.
Open Studio Hours:
Tuesdays, 1pm-5pm
Fridays, 4pm-8pm
Saturdays, 1pm-5pm
Sundays, 10am-2pm
