Description
Enter the world of fantastical forms and sculptural storytelling! In this 5-week hand-building series, you’ll design and build your own creatures—real, mythical, imagined, or hybrid. This class invites you to step into your creative universe and bring characters to life in clay.
This class is perfect for anyone who loves cute creatures, narrative sculpture, and playful experimentation. You can choose to build one or two more complex, detailed creatures or create a series of smaller characters over the course of the session.
What You’ll Learn
- Fundamentals of sculpting creatures using hand-forming and additive sculpting techniques
- Planning a character: anatomy, emotion, posture, and personality
- How to build solid or hollow forms suitable for firing
- Attaching limbs, wings, horns, tails, faces, and expressive features
- Surface refinement, texturing, and smoothing techniques
- Designing surface color and finish, using underglazes and glazes
What to Expect
This class is beginner-friendly and open-ended. You are encouraged to:
- Bring an idea, sketch, or theme to explore (or just show up and get inspired by demos and examples)
- Develop characters with story and personality
- Experiment with proportion, expression, creature anatomy, and narrative details
- Build one larger, more detailed sculpture or a family/series of smaller ones
Each week includes demos, examples, and creative prompts with plenty of hands-on guidance. Whether your creatures are whimsical, elegant, spooky, cute, or otherworldly, you’ll walk away with sculptural works that are full of personality and charm.
No prior clay experience required—just imagination and the desire to make something alive with character!
What’s Included:
- 5 Instructed Sessions, 2 hours each
- Material and Tools: Each student will receive 12 lbs of clay, 10 firing slips, and access to tools and our large selection of custom glazes.
